I NEED A MIRACLE

I was supposed to go look for Cars today, however, my dad had a pretty late night so… that’s not going to happen. That’s ok though, because it has given me time to share something, something disappointing. How shall I begin this? Hmmm..

Fashion guys, there are a lot of corrupted parts of the fashion world. Actually, the whole planet is fucking corrupted, because humans, like any other species, are not perfect. We are ‘intelligent’ though and when fucked up minds have the power of intelligence, crazy shit can happen. It’s like people say, a smart evil individual is a lot more dangerous than a stupid evil person. I don’t know if people actually say that, but I think that statement is true. One of the most obvious issues facing fashion and all creative industries in general is plagiarism. Where does inspiration end and blatant stealing start? Season after season chain stores are ‘inspired’ by designer clothing. Season after season we see designs ‘inspired’ or just completely stolen from designers such as Chanel, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Givenchy etc etc. You know what I’m talking about. Many people, even myself, buy these rip offs. Our reasons? We can’t afford the real thing. Even if I saved up a lot of money and only ‘invested’ in key pieces, I’d still be broke. In my current situation it would take me at least 5 months of work (without spending any of my pay) to save up for a small Chanel bag. Even if I tried to avoid these obvious rip offs, which I often do, it’s likely that something I’m buying from a chain store has been inspired by a designer label. The whole thing is pretty messed up,  but designer labels don’t really do that much about it, or perhaps it’s just too difficult to keep an eye on all the brands ripping them off. I’m guessing they’ve just accepted it as part of being in the industry, plus, a lot of these huge brands like Chanel are already making enough money.

What I find really fucked up is when a brand rips off a tiny, not well known designer and markets a stolen idea and product under their own label, often selling it for even more than the original creator. You know what is fucked up? A brand stealing a product designed by a sixteen year old girl and produced by her mother. Marketing the product as their signature item for the season and selling it for even more than the original product and refusing to admit that they’ve done anything wrong.

I’m sure many of you have heard of Larissa, the brain child of Velvet Codeine – her blog and Miracle Eye, an online clothing store that she owns and runs. I first discovered Larissa on Lookbook, I then found her blog and was amazed by this young teen’s excellent sense of style. I loved everything she wore. I then discovered her online store and fell in love with that too, the fabrics she chooses for the clothing are so lovely. The clothing on Miracle Eye is designed by Larissa and produced by her mother. I, being a very loyal Miracle Eye customer myself, was appalled when I learnt that a brand based in L.A had ripped off one of Larissa’s designs.

This is the dress that has been on the Miracle Eye website for quite some time. Worn by Larissa herself.

If you click THIS LINK you will see the ripped off design, it’s by a brand called See You Monday. Exact same fabric, identical style, with what appears to be a  difference in length. Larissa has been very supportive of Dark Vice for many months now. Like the Sharkies of Black Milk who always jump to defend the brand they love whenever they spot a copy,  I couldn’t help but feel the need to defend Larissa. Us bloggers have to stick together and support each other in times like this. Something like this would never happen to a blogger like Tavi who is so well known and widely respected, so damn it, it shouldn’t happen to talented, innovative girls like Larissa either. I know what it feels like to be copied, especially when you don’t even feel like you’re established yet, it’s fucking infuriating. So please support Larissa guys and DON’T buy the copied version. Buy Larissa’s original! it’s cheaper too! Plus, Larissa’s store gives you the option of having the clothing tailored to your measurements. If that’s not enough to persuade you, I don’t know what is!

To finish this post off, an outfit I wore last week. I think these are the shortest shorts I’ve ever worn.

I shall reply to comments tonight! Must quickly get ready for work now :(

All the photos used for the images of Larissa are from her blog and store.

Now that I’ve stopped crying.. I can finally write this comment. Okay, first off, I can’t even begin to let you know how much I appreciate this, and you. When I go to Australia (I will go!!! I swear!!), I will meet you and we will have fun and eat ice cream and pounce around in platforms and flick off every pervert together. Kapeesh?! Second, these photos absolutely KICK ASS. Do I have permission to use the one of the tie dye dress on the website? Credit will OBVIOUSLY be provided ;)

Lastly, I know I’ve said this before, but you are so fucking talented it’s unreal. I will invite you to every single fashion week I showcase my new collections at when I’m an adult, including a paid flight for you AND your boyfriend. You are so good at what you do naturally, knowing that you taught yourself on lonely nights because your peers SUCKED is so fucking amazing. These kids man, they’re going to regret every single milli-second they ignored you, made fun of you, or dodged you. Fuck them. You are so beautiful, your style and your personality are so radiant, it’s hard to just ignore it. You are a gem and I hope your boyfriend knows he is DAMN lucky to have you. Your rants MAKE MY DAY — is that weird?

I do agree with you on also purchasing pieces that are inspired by ‘the real thing’, but only because the real thing is ridonkulously out of my price range!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These people did this to a brand that sells AFFORDABLE clothing, sweatshop-free, and going to a good person. See You Monday and their mindless designer are going nowhere. Today I was talking to a friend about this, and he was able to relate — he came up with the idea of what is now Glee. He produced and presented this idea to one of his real estate customers (he sells lofts, buildings, etc.), and this customer is head in charge of some television company, and he told me this: The moment people start stealing, the beginning of their end has begun. After he told me that, I stared blankly at my hands and realized he was right. I was crying when I was telling him this because I become so enraged when I explain what happened to people.

You are such a good friend and I promise you that if I ever see someone rip you off, I will fucking SHOOT them. You deserve nothing but the best and I mean that with all my heart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3 <3 <3

Aw thank you Larissa, but like I said on FB, no need to thank me!! Thank YOU and your mother for making such cool stuff!

    • Erica

I’m so so so incredibly happy that I found this post after Googling that dress. I had seen it on another site & wanted to buy it but now I am going to buy from you Larissa, and not that knock-off SYM crap. I will always support a small independent designer and I wish you all the very best with your designs. Imitation is the best form of flattery, and even though it FUCKING SUCKS this happened to you, I’m glad that their rip-off brought me to discover your blog & online store <3

i own that dress! the original one from miracle eye, not the copy. that is so sad. larissa is truly talented and i’m upset that this should happen to her.

  • Isabel Slone

WOWWWWW, this is stupid and awful and it’s hard to believe that it happens all the time. She looks awesome, going to check out her blog right now!

  • Angelina Ballerina

No. Just. No. UGH I’M SO PISSED OFF RIGHT NOW. *emotional investment in blogs and/or their stores* I saw the dress on Miracle Eye AND on Wasteland and totally didn’t put it together that they were, uh, THE SAME THING. Plagiarism in le fashion world sucks, though I guess I mostly relate to it in the context of people copying people’s INDIVIDUAL STYLE more than a large super-fancy-and-rich designer store. Ugh.

  • http://mycreepysmile.blogspot.com.es/ Creepy Smile

I find it outrageous what happened to the dress of Larissa.

I also love her blog and her shop, and I think fatal to copy it that way. I think it’s great that you make this claim.

And as always, love your collages and your clothes.

    KiSSeS!^^

    That is so horrible :-(

wow, great post! i’ve been lusting after that miracle eye dress for so long… and when i saw that other dress i thought the same thing… just ridiculous! i am a huge fan of you and larissa’s work and i know you will both go far!!! so just ignore all these people and do what you do best, CREATE!

ps all these photos are sickkk!

  • http://just-add-sequins.blogspot.in/ Mary

Aww you are such a great friend!! Copycats are the worst (I try not to buy anything if I know it’s a copy, but sometimes you just don’t know…) but it seems like Miracle Eye’s customers will stay loyal to/defend her, and that’s the best thing! :)

  • wenopia

the net has been the best and worst for small designers!!! It’s heartbreaking to see things like that happen :( and how can you be so disconnected from something you spend so much time and energy on. i don’t blame people who hoard things away from the evil lurkers of cyberspace out to capitalize on anything they can get their hands on. ps. love miracle eye thanks! im also going to be in melbs 4-11 july would love if we met up or something do some blog posts on my photobooth haha x

  • Madeline Pendleton

I’m so glad you talked about this!!! Larissa’s designs are fucking AWESOME. I actually feel bad for Wasteland for getting wrapped up in this, because they are actually a family-owned small business and I’m sure had no clue that See You Monday did this. >:|

If there’s a silver lining, it’s that Larissa is SUCH a fashion genius that everyone wants to be as good as her. She might be the underdog now, but in five years, she will be OWNING the fashion world.

    • http://darkvice.net/ Magnet

I agree and seriously hope she becomes successful as hell. Just seeing her design being flaunted all over See You Monday’s blog and stocked on sites like Mod cloth makes me so sad :(

  • http://the-pink-zombie.blogspot.com/ Emily

Wow, that is such bullshit. It’s painfully obvious that it’s a copy. I love her version and would totally buy it if I wasn’t broke! The velvet tie-dye is insane. She’s obviously super talented and deserves the credit. You are such a kind person for doing this for her. You make me realize there’s still good in this world!

May the force be with you.
    Emily

    P.S. I love your tights. <3

  • http://the-pink-zombie.blogspot.com/ Emily

P.S. I actually saw the copied dress on Modcloth just now and left a review with the link to the ORIGINAL Miracle Eye dress and urged people to buy from her instead.

    • http://darkvice.net/ Magnet

      That’s GREAT Emily!! good job!

  • bloempjebont

    your photoshop skills are amazing!
    xx

    • http://darkvice.net/ Magnet

Why thank you, I should hope they (the skills) are close to amazing though, seeing as Photoshop has practically been my best friend for seven years! haha

  • Nancy

Are you kidding me? This is just the same fabric and I’ve seen many versions of it. You all just obviously bought the same fabric. Get over it.

    • http://darkvice.net/ Magnet

No Nancy, I am not kidding you. Have you really seen many versions of it? Care to share?

Did you know that Cadbury has trademarked the colour purple? Yes, that’s right. If another brand of chocolate was to sell their products in packaging covered in the same colour of purple that Cadbury uses, Cadbury would most likely sue them.

That’s not even a fabric, that’s just a COLOUR. It’s not about stealing a fabric, or a colour, or any other specific thing. It’s about stealing an IDEA. Cadbury came up with the idea to use purple as their signature colour, so they don’t want anyone else to copy that idea.

Larissa’s Miracle Eye dress was the first time I’d seen that sort of fabric be used… and I do ALL my shopping online, so I’ve seen a lot. Another brand should respect that and not go out of their way to buy the same fabric and create the exact same dress. You dig?

If the same thing happened to you, I doubt you would just ‘get over it’. Lastly, don’t come on to my blog and tell me how to feel or what to do. Thank you.

      • http://darkvice.net/ Magnet

Also, I don’t know who you’re talking about when you say, ‘you all’ I’m not directly part of this -___-

  • Princess Lisha

OMG! LOVE the rainbow dress!! Thankyou for posting this..or maybe I shouldnt thank you, I think this girls store is going to cost me a small fortune in purchases ;) xx

Haha, I know right?! I’ve bought quite a few things from Miracle Eye but I still have a whole list of custom orders in my head that I want to send to Larissa.
